Covid-19 Severity

COVID-19 patients can experience a wide range of symptoms from mild to severe. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. According to the CDC, adults with COVID-19 can be grouped into the following severity of illness categories, although the criteria in each category may overlap or vary across guidelines and clinical trials.

Asymptomatic or PresymptomaticIndividuals who test positive for COVID-19 by virologic testing using a molecular diagnostic (e.g., polymerase chain reaction) or antigen test, but have no symptoms.

Mild SymptomsIndividuals who have any of the various signs and symptoms of COVID-19 (e.g., fever, cough, sore throat, malaise, headache, muscle pain) without shortness of breath, dyspnea, or abnormal chest imaging.

Moderate SymptomsIndividuals who have evidence of lower respiratory disease by clinical assessment or imaging, but no breathing difficulty and a normal oxygen saturation on room air.

Severe SymptomsIndividuals who have difficulty breathing and decreased oxygen saturation on room air. Patients are typically admitted into the hospital and require some form of respiratory support, such as mechanical ventilation.

Critical SymptomsIndividuals who have respiratory failure, septic shock, and/or multiple organ dysfunction.
